My First Crochet Hat!

It's been 2 weeks since I decided I wanted to teach myself to crochet and I've probably crocheted maybe 7 times.  So how excited am I to show you my first hat?  Now, if you are a seasoned crocheter, you will no doubt feel an urge to teach me about gauge....and darn it, it is really kicking my rear end.  lol  That hat was NOT supposed to be that big, but by the time I followed along with the You Tube video, that is how big mine was.  lol  So I had to add 2-3 addition double crochet decrease rows.  (Doesn't that sound technical?  lol)

Anyhoo...It doesn't look quite right so here are the photos of it laying flat.  It could just be that my HUGE (and I mean HUGE, only wore the boys band helmets HUGE) head is too big or that I am just not a hat person (due to said HUGE head).  But it is my favorite color and I just love it.

I think this is officially called a Crochet Kingston Cap

I don't think it is supposed to be so wavy - that is because my gauge on size is so off.  lol

OK now dear fellow crocheters...(is that the correct term?).....PLEASE will someone show me options on how to hold the yarn in the left hand to help with tension control?  I have tried so many things.  BTW, I hold the hook like a butter knife - tried so hard to hold it the other cradled way but cannot.  But what works for you on tension?  Any videos you can direct me to?  I'm a visual gal.

The You Tube video I followed was this one:

I may be linking to THESE parties.

Thanks!

  3. Wow! Great job. I LOVE crochet...and I prefer smaller projects because I get bored with things that take longer (like blankets...ugh). Keep at it girl!

  4. Good for you teaching yourself to crochet! My mom loves to crochet and knit and I benefit from her talent. It's so fun to be able to request things from her, but it would be even better if I could make them myself!

  5. i am a lefty so i do everything backwards but my advice is to wrap it 2 times around your finger and that will help with the tension, or else look at youtube and you can find all sorts of help there!!! love the hat! :D

  9. Great job! I'm not a crocheter, I'm a knitter, so I can't really help with your questions, but I can encourage you to keep at it and come on over to my blog for Fibers on Friday! I'd love for you to link this up!

  12. That's a great first project! Here's a couple pages I have found that might help you with gauge issues, although I think a lot of it has to do with practice as well.

  14. Your hat looks great and it takes a while to figure every thing out. As far as holding the tension thread I wrap it around my little finger and hold the thread using my thumb and index finger and then using my middle finger to move it around. I then tried knitting the european way and use my thumb and middle finger to hold the thread and use my index finger to move the thread, boy did that mess me up! but it works now so just try and just keep crocheting it will come easier. I hold the hook with my thumb and index finger, you did fantastic!!

  16. I think it is great for a first try! I wish I could crochet and knit, but I haven't had time or a good teacher to learn from. I may have to try it using the video though. Thanks for the inspiration.

  17. I like to crochet, but I can never follow a pattern exactly. It just didn't work for me and I almost always have to do some adjustments.
I think your hat is very nice. And I love its color, too.

  18. Your hat looks wonderful. You were brave for taking on a pattern like that as your first project. I wouldn't necessarily thing of that pattern as a beginner pattern but you worked the pattern beautifully.

I don't have any photos for you, but I wrap the yarn around my pinky to help with the tension. Don't worry if you have to stop every so often and adjust your tension, with practice you will discover a method that works for you. Keep up the great work!
