Just tonight, I whipped out my first scarf.....and I don't think I made any mistakes. Woo hoo!! I think it took me about 2 hours but my right hand kept going numb, so I took a lot of breaks. I need to relax more, I think. lol
Last week, I decided to take a beginner crochet class, just to make sure I hadn't developed any bad habits and to get some questions answered. I taught myself to crochet by watching You Tube videos about 3-4 weeks ago and as a result, have struggled reading some patterns. Turns out, I'm making it harder than it is.
Well, that isn't surprising, considering I just found out:
1. I am using one of the most difficult crochet needles/brands (but it is best for preventing carpel tunnel!)
2. I was using one of the most difficult yarns.
Why not make the patterns more difficult? lol
I did change yarns to one she recommended - Caron Simply Soft, which I found on sale at JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores. It is even cheaper online at Herrshner's ($1.99 at Herrshner's versus $3.79 regular price at Jo Ann's!)
This is SO soft, I love it. I am hoping to make some fingerless gloves or wristlets to wear with it. Sometimes sitting here at the computer, my hands get a little cold and some soft gloves would be great.
I am so happy I learned to crochet - I truly love it. Exciting to look at projects that are available!
I may be linking to THESE parties.
Wow, that colour works perfect with the pattern. I had NO idea that it was more difficult to use one hook vs another, I just know that I prefer metal hooks to plastic ones! I haven't see Caron yarn where I live, but I really like Bernat Satin yarn, it's nice and soft too.
ReplyDeleteWell done, it looks fab! I find my right hand hurts after an hour or so of crochet, and when I think about it, I find I'm clutching the hook like someone is trying to wrestle it away from me! I have to make a conscious effort to relax that hand.
ReplyDeleteAdorable! You may have inspired me to dig out my hooks and get to work!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty! I think I'll give that pattern a try.

Great job on the scarf! I'm impressed for your first try! I've knit before and I tried to crochet, but I was horrible. I think you can either do one or the other. Can you knit also?
ReplyDeleteIt turned out great. I'm your newest follower. I'm throwing my first link party today (Monday) it would be great if you would stop by and share your project.

It really turned out great! I love to crochet and would like to try to make one of these! Love the color, too! ♥
ReplyDeleteI learned to crochet about 30 years ago from a little old lady who came to our very small 4 room school (I lived way out in the country!) once a week to teach us girls how to crochet while her husband taught the boys basic woodworking skills. She didn't know how to read patterns so I eventually figured that part out by myself. I love this scarf and have never made one like that. I will have to give it a go. Your scarf turned out great! Thanks for sharing!

I've done that pattern before, it's fun and fast. Yes if you're hand is going numb you're too tense.
